Dear Reader,
My love for music began in childhood, profoundly shaped by my grandfather, Kim Green, a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. I spent summers with him in the small town of Nordhiem, TX, where we’d talk for hours about music, life, and God. He taught himself to play guitar by ear as a kid and was playing in honky-tonks by the time he was 14. At 17, he hitchhiked to Nashville to chase the music scene, but eventually returned to Texas, where he continued performing. Over the years, he picked up steel guitar, bass, fiddle, and mandolin, and wrote his own honky-tonk tunes and country ballads. Even in his 70s, he still plays in local Texas bands and shares his wisdom with me on being practical, facing the realities of pursuing music, and understanding the importance of leading a fulfilling life beyond it.
Singing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember—whether in the car, in my bedroom, or at school. During my teenage years, I sang in a few bands around San Antonio, and every now and then, my grandpa would call me up and ask if I wanted to sing some old-time country songs with the bands he was playing in.
In 2020, I picked up the guitar and started teaching myself how to write songs. Grandpa’s stories sparked something inside me, and as soon as I could, I stepped out into the world, diving headfirst into the music and art scene. I played at nearly every open mic I could find, sharing my songs with anyone willing to listen. I made it a point to introduce myself to other artists and musicians around town. I’d stay out all day and late into the night, busking on city streets for tourists and locals alike. I traveled to songwriter listening rooms in nearby towns and poured my heart out on stages big and small. Though my talents were raw and unpolished at the start, it was my unwavering determination, hard work, and persistence that set me apart.
These days, my band, Autumn Michele & The Pearls, and I play my original songs and well-loved covers, all steeped in the sounds of country, blues, and rock ’n’ roll. I’m still out there busking whenever I can, but most of my week is dedicated to band rehearsals and gigs—whether I’m playing solo, teaming up as a duo or trio, or on stage with my full band.
We’re also cooking up demos of some brand-new tunes during band practice, and plan to have the demos out on Bandcamp this summer.
